If you make the same mistake I do— you can do a quick boil method. Add beans to a pot with just enough water to cover them. Bring to a boil uncovered for about 3 minutes. Remove from heat, cover with a lid, and let sit for an hour. Rinse beans and they are ready to cook.

I like my red beans and rice on the thicker side. Add additional liquid to adjust to your personal preference.

After I remove the turkey necks and while they are cooling, I take a potato masher or the back of a wooden spoon and mash some of the beans. Pulse until it’s reached a paste consistency. Transfer to a large bowl and mix in your olive oil and seasonings. Cover steak with mixture and let marinate for two hours or up to 24 hours.

To prepare your dressing, add all under salad dressing except the olive oil and salt and pepper to a blender or food processor. Blend until smooth. Slowly stream in your olive oil to thin out. Add salt and pepper to taste. Place dressing in the refrigerator until needed.

Remove steak from marinade and place on a baking sheet with a wire rack. Let come to room temperature and let access marinade drip off.

Pre-heat your oven to 450°F and place steak on the middle rack. Blanch your basil for 30 seconds and put directly into a bowl filled with ice to stop the cooking process. Once your basil has cooled, draw out as much water as possible. For larger scale events such as my annual Galentines day, I create a full creative brief that is a multipage version of the board above.

The library was one of my favorite places to go growing up. Books provided an escape that I now find in the kitchen. As an ode to a place I loved as kid, this is what I would imagine my own personal library party.

If I was throwing this party, I would take the idea of a simple book exchange like “Wine and Spine” a step further and develop it into library themed club. Guests would be met with a rooms engulfed in candle light and surrounded by mellow music.

The Shopping List - Decor

For decor, grab books from your local thrift store. Use the pages to layer as table covers. You can take a hole punch and string with fishing wire to hang from the ceiling to give a floating page effect.

The size of your space will determine the number of candles and holders needed. Shopping at thrift stores, Dollar Tree, and Ikea can give you a variety of shapes, sizes, and types of candles to decorate with. When having parties where I want to use real glasses for a larger number of people but I don’t want to purchase because of storage space., I use a rental company to get them by the dozen. (For ATL people, I use Quest Events)

I would keep the florals light with singular roses or other flowers in deep colors while leaning on the candles and food and wine displays to be the main star.

Things I would consider for food light decor and food styling:

Book Embossed Napkins / $13.50/36 Pack

12 Piece Silver Appetizer Plates / $6.59/12 Pack

3 Tier Silver Cupcake Stand / $13.19 Each

12 Pack Dessert Candy Dishes/ $4.39/12 Pack

Glass Taper Candle Holder/ $1.25 Each

Aluminum Candle Holder/ $79.95 (it is pricey for just a party, however, I like to think of buying things that serve as regular decor and party items)

Disposable Wine Glass/ $32.99/25 Pack

3 Piece Stainless Steel Cheese Knives / $19.99

Stainless Steal Serving Bowl / $39.99

Menu & Grocery Store Planning

As much as this is a night of intellectual conversation, it is also a night of indulgence. A good event makes sense end to end with food being a key component every time, esp when using it as a decor piece.

If I were throwing this party, a large grazing table with cheeses, meats, dips and crackers, and mini appetizers with varying heights would be my choice. Light bites that also serves as an area for a conversation piece is ideal for a party such as this to keep people moving around and not glued to a table. It allows you to do variety of items while not breaking the bank by buying produce in bulk from wholesale stores.

With it being a wine party and grapes being in season, I would do champagne towers of grape bunches or use a styrofoam cone and toothpick to make a standing grape display. For a more savory option, you can use mini donuts covered in honey for sweet and sticky treat.

Pedestal serving trays will add height to areas on your grazing table. These would be the perfect display for deviled eggs with truffle or crispy chicken. Stack chicken skewers on a large platter.

If this were my menu, my grazing table would include:

Cheeses (Cheddar, Colby, Brie, Goat)

Crackers and breads

Smoked Salmon

Cocktail Shrimp served on ice in a champagne bucket

Mini meatballs with sauce and a bow tie pasta on a toothpick. (made with frozen meatballs)

Chopped caesar salad served in mini coups

Roast beef crostinis with horseradish mayo + caramelized onions (If you don’t have time to make steaks this is a great way to get the same vibe without the work by getting thinly sliced roast beef from the deli)

Deviled Eggs Trio: Classic with Chives, Truffle, and Crispy Chicken Skin

Glazed Chicken Skewers

If you do want to also serve a house cocktail, pick something you can pre-batch and name it after a banned book. With this being a wine party, having a Red Wine Sangria called Grapes of Wrath would be a great choice.

The Day Of

There are a number of details that go into pulling this theme off. A good host knows to give yourself time, but a great hosts knows you always start the day before at minimum.

If I was throwing this party, I would do do my prep schedule like this:

3 Days before the party: Prep decor by pulling pages out of books and hole punching/stringing. Clean all serve ware, stemware, and candle holders.

2 Days Before the Party: Grocery Shop. Most of the things I would need for the grazing board would come from Costco. Smaller items like the thinly sliced roast beef and cocktail shrimp would be picked up from a regular grocery store. If you are doing florals, pick them up as well.

The Night Before the Party: Prep all food that can be made ahead of time. Tasks like cutting cheese, boiling your eggs, and making your mini meatballs are items that may be time consuming the day of so get it out of the way. I would also put up all decor like hanging the pages from the ceiling to ensure they stick and you have the amount you want. If space allows, map out your platters/bowls for your grazing table and use sticky notes to label what you will be using them for.

The Day of the Party: Leave yourself plenty of time for set up. A grazing table can take about an hour of time or more depending on the size and number of items.

A way to elevate your party is to ensure that you hit all of the 5 senses. You easily hit hit sight, touch, and taste with the food. Enhance smell with placing small candles that have warmer, deeper scents like leather, musk, and mahogany to mimic that of a freshly bound book or a bookstore itself. (Check out these from some of my favorite Black Owned Candle companies: Lavandin Santal by Joe + Monroe, Laid Up by Hoam Candle company)

The last item on the list is absolutely your playlist. If you want to go for a mellow, jazz mood pick songs from Luxury Grooves, Ramsey Lewis or Grover Washington Jr. For more upbeat soulful music St. Paul & The Broken Bones, Thee Sacred Souls, and Leon Bridges are all great choices.

When all of these elements are put together, you have an event that you can copy and repeat in different ways, with different things and different people. You can use this same formula to host a plethora of events large or small but memorable either way.

You can watch my breakdown of this party on TikTok and shop my dedicated list of party supplies for this theme on my ShopMy.

This Would Eat: SOUPer Bowl

I don't have time to throw a soup themed football party, but if I did, this is what I would do.

Brittany Bullock

Real soup lovers know that it’s always soup season however the fall brings a plethora of opportunity to bring others into the fold. href="https://www.canva.com/templates/EAGNRVgnT08-green-and-yellow-and-brown-illustrative-american-football-party-invitation-flyer/">Canva template as inspo

The Details

Before you send out your invite, you want to create a guest list that makes sense. You can’t have a cooking competition and not have people that cook or having a plethora of only cooks. It can get crowded, the votes may be stretched, and you may have multiple of the same types of soup. You can also keep this party smaller and just invite a few friends over for a fun night!

If I was throwing this party, I would send out texts to people that I knew would be in it to win it for sign ups. Have a google doc ready to go where contestants can enter their name and the type of soup.. Bonus points if its football themed name like “Play Your Position Potato” or “Coffin CORNer Chowder.”

Once you pick a date and time and have your selected guest list, use a platform like Partiful or Hobnob to send your invites. Guests who are attending and not making a soup can bring desserts and or drinks which also lessons the work for you.

The Shopping List

The supply list for this party has accessible, low cost items. You can be as simple or as elaborate as you would like to for decor that works within party size and budget. Here are things I would consider:

4 oz disposable soup bowls $3.39/50 Pack

Plastic Soup Spoons -$8.39/ Case of 100

Football Party Picks - $6.99/25 Pack

Soup Ladles - $1.25/Each

Football Banner -$6.95/Each

Football Snack Bowls for toppings like cheese, jalapeños, etc - $7.79/12 Pack

Utensil Caddy - $6.39/Each

Football Serving Bowl - (for bread and chips) - $8.49/Each

Football Ribbon - $4.99/Each

Football Napkins — Football Field $1.49

At the grocery store

Although the party is centered around soup, having a few extra items is not a bad idea.

If I was throwing this party, I would consider grabbing a few different types of bread that people can dip and eat with the soups. I would also make a rustic chili or if you feel like showing up in a big way a brisket version. You can have hot dogs for a diy chili dog station or mini bags of Fritos for a walking taco bag.

Toppings like shredded cheese, jalapeños, onions, sour cream, croutons and bacon are also considerations for you to grab depending on the soups being served and the level of effort you want to put forth.

Making a an apple cider based cocktail with a honey simple syrup and bourbon. If it’s just the ladies, opt for this Dragonfruit Basil Lemon Drop from Pardon Me While I Elevate by Blair Crosby.

The Day Of

Outside of decor, set up will be relatively easy with stations for bowls and spoons, drinks, and the different soups. Prior to the party, print out menu cards with the soup entries for guests and include a QR code to site like Mentimeter for anonymous voting. Outside of bragging rights, gift the winner a soup trophy to commemorate the memory.

You can watch my breakdown of this theme on TikTok and see my full list of SOUPerbowl Party items on my ShopMY

Crunchwrap Supreme At Home

"I Forgot To Be Your Lover" - William Bell

Brittany Bullock

Food is expensive, it’s getting cold, and you got food at home. If not, go directly to step 2. You need to make enough to season your beef and the the broth which will make your sauce.

In a non stick skillet, add your beef and 1/2 of your seasonings.
